The stretches are held for two seconds each and often repeated six times each. This allows the target muscles to optimally lengthen without triggering the protective stretch reflex. These stretches provide maximum benefit and can be accomplished without tension or resulting trauma. As the name implies, these are active stretches that require the client to work together with the therapist. Each 60-minute session is intensive and focused on only one body region (i.e. lower back or shoulder/neck girdle). Clients should come prepared to participate and wear comfortable, loose clothing (usually gym gear). Rebecca Perez is our resident AIS practitioner and continues to work with AIS creator Aaron Mattes on achieving her advanced certification. She also holds certifications as an Exercise Physiologist, Personal Trainer, Pilates Instructor, and of course Massage Therapist.

It aims to release myofascial (connective tissue) restrictions in the body and to break up any restrictive scar tissue. It has also been known to relieve chronic tension, increase range of motion, improve posture, and restore length and flexibility to the muscles and fascia. The pressure of this massage may be somewhat slower and more intense, and massage cream isn’t always used. During this session, your therapist will focus on releasing tension from the deeper tissue structures, breaking up adhesions, and bringing balance into the body. The therapist tailors each session specifically for the individual needs of each client. Usually, they will focus on a particular area of the body, which needs the most tension reduction and relief. The treatment helps to relieve stress and pain but also helps improve the performance of daily activities. Results are typically seen after the first session, but it is recommended for a series of 2-10 sessions for maximum benefits. For the 1st-time treatment, we recommended 2 hours that includes a range of motion & muscle testing but subsequent sessions can be 60 or 90 minutes.
